Star Trek (2009)

Rating 7/10
(spoilers start where it says "SPOILERS!!!!"
I'd like to start with saying, this is a true TREKKIE'S opinion, and not one of those "new fans" that were being targeted. You know what that means, prepare for me to nit pick at the flawed star trek logic, people out of character, and lost of continuity.

The acting was good, really good. I was not a fan of TOS but did see enough to say the characters were completely on cue here. Kirk was bad ass, as always, and it was really interesting how Abrams decided to give us visuals of things we only knew by "star trek history". For those of you who wondered how Kirk handled the famous Kobayashi Maru 'no win' scenario, this is the movie for you.
The graphics are also action packed, perfect for those of us who hated the old star trek slow laser looking phasers and torpedoes with no flash. This is sci fi!

SPOILERS START HERE!!!

Ok now an overview with spoilers:
Good:

I loved how Kirk passed the Kobayashi Maru scenario, I mean I already knew he cheated to win, but actually seeing it was cool. I read that this happend in Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan (which Ive seen a long long time ago) but I dont recall.

I liked how phasers got revamped. I hated the old TOS phasers, but understand it was a budget thing.

I also liked how Abrams took a risk at offending big time fans (like my brother) by destroying Vulcan...hahahahaha, I hate those guys.

Also liked how Sulu fights with a sword, how Kirk is still the ladies man, and how Uhura was super hot as a young lady :).

Loved howe they show why Spock joined Starfleet, and how he got emotional to defend his human mother. This was really cool, and touching.

The bad: (dont read this until you see the movie, and this will only make sense if you are a trekkie, to be honest)

I will try to be as picky as possible.
1) Did a Federation ship just make first face to face contact with a Romulan ship (since this is prior to the events of "balance of terror") and no one notice, or mention they look like vulcans? Its not even a bit odd? Spock went on and on when this happened in TOS for the first time... WTF
2) Did that ship just go to full impulse.... using the warp engines? Has Abrams ever seen Star Trek? Ships have impulse engines to go at sub light speeds.... please use them.
3) Wait...so a bunch of miner Romulans.... just chill for 25 yrs... you know, and then knew about time travel enough to know exactly when spock was gonna come out? (rant begins)
[It should be noted that in the original script, they were captured by the Klingons and kept in Rura penthe for 25 yrs, a script that makes even less sense, I wont get into it]
4) Oh and black holes cause time travel?
5) And TIME TRAVEL AGAIN?!? I hate is how in this, and Enterprise, the writers seem to think that just because we know the ending, they cant make an interesting story without thowing in the "unknown" time travel cheap 'anything can happen' crap in there. The story would have been interesting without it.
6) Romulus' sun is about to go nova, which btw is something we can predict TODAY millennia ahead of time, and happens in the galaxy 3 times a century, and it happens to be Romulus' sun... BS... But besides that... they trusted SPOCK!!!! a freeken vulcan? Romulan scientists wouldnt trust their mother with this, they sure as hell arent gonna trust a Vulcan.
7) Red matter? care explain?
8) Even assuming the last 5 are ok, since when does MAKING a black hole make things better? Everyone and everything on Romulus would still die!
9) Wheres Remus?
10) NOOOO I love Romulus!!!! NOOO... how are you gonna wipe out the homeworld of one of the top 5 major powers of the Alpha quadrant? BS
11) Ok in the bar, Uhura orders a  Cardassian drink, didnt they meet the Cardies around 2350ish? This is set in 2250ish, a century earlier.
12) When Kirk is doing the Orion chick (good for him), wait... since when are the Orion part of the Federation. As of 2360s, they were mercenaries, who never joined the Federation. I am saying she couldnt be in starfleet, I just want a little explanaition.
13) Apparently, the Temporal Prime Directive means nothing to Spock.
14) When spock witnesses Vulcan explode, to actually see that, that close, he would have to be in the same solar system, which would have killed him too (although this scene looked cool).

Ok but despite those things I ranted about, its still a good overall movie, so go watch it, 7/10

Jayz Movie Grading Scale

Hello all (which for now is no one),

Well let me start by giving you a little taste of my scale, my biases, my preferences, and some examples of movies I have rated a certain way. This is so that you can understand where I am coming from. So if I over rate sci fis, and you know I usually rate 2 stars higher than you, adjust your thinking accordingly.

First, I like science fiction a lot, however because of this, I am critical of bad science. If I see something physically impossible, the movie already lost points. Also, I like epic movies (like Troy, gladiator, LOTR) and movies that teach me a lesson. Furthrmore, replay value has some weight. I ask myself, "would I watch it again?" if the answer is no, thats an automatic -1 star. Oh by stars, I will go on a 1-10 scale with divisions of 1/2 a 'star'. Stars just sound cooler than points.
My top movies are (in no order, the only 10s ever)
-The Aviator
-Training Day
-Minority Report

Oh and I almost forgot, I have a bias against humor and horror. The reason for horror is easy, its hardly ever done right, and often relies on "surprise" horror, which is cheap, and has 0 replay value. Exceptions would be Saw1 and 2. Comedies, arent memorable, and personally, I feel like I have enough humor in my life, I dont need to pay for it :P....

Averages and such:
Out of all the movies I have ever seen.
3 have ever gotten a perfect 10 (the ones listed above, duh)
about 5 or 6 have gotten a 1, including "wolf creek" and "open water"
My average is somewhere around 4-5, I am not easily impressed.

Finally, I thought about rating past movies, but rating based on memory is cheap and inaccurate, so all reviews will be on recently seen movies....
OK enjoy (and feel.... ie I beg you to help me better this by commenting!!!)
